eyeopener

How much WEIGHT the skeletal structure has to hold...
As a personal trainer, it gives me immense delight when I see someone working towards their goals successfully. They don’t just work towards a physical transformation, but also a healthy mind and spirit. I’ve been incredibly lucky to witness many clients morph into entirely different people - physically, mentally and emotionally, thanks to the positive changes - decisive changes - they make to their lives.
Most of us are aware the problems obesity can cause. Being overweight or obese puts you at risk for many diseases and conditions. The more body fat you have the more likely you are to develop: coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems... preventable illnesses. Yet this risk doesn’t appear to concern many people. Maybe we think that won’t be us?

So, what if we think instead of what may appear to some as, less problematic issues, those we don’t instantly relate to excessive weight but often laugh off as ‘getting older’ or ‘the cold weather’. Painful back anyone? Creaking knees? Joints? Aching feet? We place so much extra stress on our skeletal system when we carry around excessive weight. Of course there are going to be aches and pains! Do you think with less load our bodies would have more chance?

Maybe you enjoy having aches and pains or maybe you don’t mind being sick, but if you’re overweight and suffer any ills, something REALLY has to hit home so you start making a difference for your health before it’s too late. Noone else is going to do it for you!

What will it take for YOU to start considering yourself as worth it? A priority? I welcome feedback on that!
Meanwhile, for those who have decided their lives are more valuable than regular visits to the doctor, just some thoughts.

Doing it all by yourself can be difficult at times, but having a team of supporters can help you to stick to it, specially when things get tough. Strength in numbers! Surround yourself with positive, likeminded people. At home. At the gym! Negative people can drain your motivation and energy which can be detrimental to the way you eat, to your workouts, and therefore your results. Don’t forget your attitude also matters. You can’t focus on being negative. If you’re after results then you have to change your perspective too!

Believe in YOU! When you’re overweight, it’s easy to be down on yourself. Easy to lose confidence. With every small step you take towards success though, your confidence will grow. With every goal you achieve your self esteem will be boosted! It’s crucial, to simply start.

You won’t always see loss on the scale. Even when you do everything right, sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. Frustrating? You betcha! But when it happens, accept it, and trust that your efforts will show eventually. Your efforts are ALWAYS making a difference. Focus on your wellbeing, not vanity and the results WILL happen.

There are no quick fixes. You DO have to change your lifestyle - a total transformation for life, not just short term. Managing your weight is not a temporary circumstance. You have to stick at it for the long haul. Work hard at it. Commit. Most people do want to lose weight, but most aren’t willing to make the sacrifices it may require. There’s no shortcuts. No easy way out. You really won’t be successful with a half-hearted effort. Those that are successful, know that.

And lastly. If you read this column regularly then you should know this one by now, you HAVE to be consistent. It’s vital. The valuable habits you learn along the way have to continue if you’re to be victorious in the long term.

If you eat clean, exercise consistently, and have an unyielding focus and positive view of yourself, the results you are after, the goals you’ve set for yourself, no matter what they are, have no option but to transpire! Health, good health, alongside a strong, functional body, is the ultimate goal for us all.
