let's get real

Madonna ...

We're not that silly that we dont realise cover photos aren't photoshopped to perfection but let's get real ....

We're not perfect. And that's ok. Those that grace the covers of magazines are no different than us ...

Check out these before and after photos of male and female celebrities and models ...

full of suds!

I was recently sent an email from a reader with an image attached of an old advertisement from the early 1900’s for obesity soap. The claim? “Wash away fat and years of age.” They thought I would be amused and it certainly created a smile, but it also piqued a curiosity. I’m always fascinated by the deluge of weight loss gimmicks we are continually hit with, but soap? Even though the ad is over a century old, that’s new to me. Unfortunately, googling ‘weight loss soap’, brought up not only the snake oil salesmen ads, but, the surprise that apparently there STILL IS weight loss soaps (note the plural) available for purchase! Where have I been living?! It’s extraordinary how long weight has been such an issue and, how long we have had this array of merchandise on the market. Not much has  really changed. Weight loss “cures” of yesteryear prove that pseudo-science has been around for a long time and modern day advertising doesn’t even come close to having  the monopoly on weightloss claims.
Google “weight loss ads.” Click on images. An avalanche of deceitful headlines. It probably won’t really surprise you.

'reducing soap' - and still available in modern day times!!
"Reduce any part of the body desired without affecting other parts. No dieting or exercising. Be as slim as you wish. Acts like magic in reducing double chin, abdomen, ungainly ankles, unbecoming wrists, arms and shoulders, large busts, or any superfluous fat on body."

"One to three cakes usually accomplish the purpose."

:) ok. anyone want three?

"This obesity soap (used like an ordinary soap) positively reduces fat without dieting or gymnastics. Absolutely harmless, never fails to reduce flesh when directions are followed."

Reduce flesh :D
I wonder what the directions are ... :)

an ocean swim

And another one down ... Christie and Chris, swam this time ... from long island (palm bay) to shute harbour - a total of 8.8kms ... in 2hrs 8mins ... a short swim for them compared to others but joining them, and totally inspirational to watch, was 11 year old, Olivia! What an incredible feat of endurance and such focus by her ... congratulations to them all.
This time, I was off the main boat and the kayaker instead. Looks easy!? man, its tough :) my feet could barely reach the rudder pedals and we couldnt figure out how to adjust them, so it was a fight for most of the way to keep it upright and prevent it from heading straight on top of the swimmers where the waves kept trying to force me to go - I think I was more concerend about them being zapped by the shark zapperer :D - oh what a LOAD OF FUN!!!!!
Inspirational to witness and fantastic to be a part of ...     photos

depression and exercise

Depression is an insidious illness, a quiet erosion of the soul that affects one in four women and one in eight men. The chances are high that you know someone that has depression or you may even suffer with it yourself, yet the illness still has a serious  stigma attached to it which magnifies the impact even more.
In the past we lived within communities that used to look out for each other, neighbours communicated, giving each other a voice. Life, was temperate. Those days are long gone. It’s a fast paced, self driven society we’ve created now - tasks are ongoing, people are continually busy, rushing from one appointment to another and everywhere we turn we are hit with an onslaught of technology battling for our attention. The result is - a LOT of anxious people out there, helpless and unable to cope as they are expected to, and feeling alone, like they are the ‘only ones’ unable to grapple this overwhelming lifestyle. They smile, hiding their depression behind a mask - because they feel they don’t live up to what society expects them to be and fear being judged. Feelings, aren’t always rational in the mind of a depressive.

the first step

When wanting to lose weight, choosing the most nutritional foods to eat is imperative, but exercise is absolutely crucial to getting, and remaining, fit and healthy also. If you’re overweight, losing even 5-10% of your body weight can help negate many of the dangerous issues obesity or overweightedness can cause.
Do you consider yourself important enough to start evaluating your lifestyle and making some positive and progressive changes?
When it comes to exercise I hear a myriad of endless reasons why someone can’t, that seem logical to that person as they explain. “Don’t have time, too busy.” Fear of something new. “I can’t do it.” But they are, excuses. Excuses that NEED to be removed if you want to achieve results. Your attitude creates your reality, so it’s important to have the right one. Your mind is powerful.

"The one thing which I was really afraid to face up to was changing what I put in my mouth."
- Joe Cross from Hungry For Change

adrenal stressors

A great guide to help you understand what can happen if you don't get good sleep, have poor nutrition and over train (just to name a few). Adrenal fatigue can take months and even years to come back from...

"What I finally learned after my exhaustion:
■ People who train hard and look lean are not always healthy.
■ Eating fat will not make me fat
■ Working out smarter, not harder is often the way to achieve performance and aesthetic goals.
■ Sleep is the cornerstone of being able to eat well, train well and to allow the body to re-set stress levels and lose body fat."
The Real Deal on Adrenal Fatigue article

waistline expansion

"WAISTLINES are expanding faster than production lines for plus-size clothing, with demand for extra large sizes ballooning by 70 per cent in just two years."

When our pants are getting tighter it should be a trigger for us to downsize our body, not upsize our clothes ...
