open your mind ...

A weekend trip to Brisbane recently was a renewed eyeopener to the prevalence of obesity in our society. The shopping centre was rife with overweightedness, no age group excluded. Most of us are aware the problems being over weight or obese can cause. It puts us at risk of many preventable diseases and ailments. When you see it on such an enormous scale it’s frightening to think about where we will end up as a nation, specially financially, as each year the obesity statistics continue to rise. It comes at great cost on all of us via the health system plus the ever increasing waiting list in both the public and private hospital sectors.
There was a lady at the cinema sitting not far from me, the middle arm lifted between the two seats to fit her. She waddled her morbidly obese body slowly out at the end with great and painful difficulty. You could see the folds of her stomach below her top. It was the saddest sight to see because her life could be so very different. I wanted to hug her and tell her that! The ability to change.
I can relate. At 120kgs I was not quite that debilitated but had I not decided to make a proactive change I probably would be by now.
Gaining weight though, doesn’t just happen. Indubitably, there’s a minor percentage of people who increase weight due to medical reasons, but highly unlikely you and I are them. It’s incredibly rare to have a medical condition that makes you obese. Yes, there are definitely medications and conditions that can predispose you to gain small amounts of weight, but true medical conditions causing you to gain exorbitant kilograms are scarce.

Most of us gain weight due to our perplexing emotions! Food is a great coping tool for life. It makes you happy when you’re sad. Doesn’t it? It’s company when you’re bored or lonely. Yes? It lifts your mood on a bummer day. For sure! Food is always there for you. Food is wonderful that way. Right? But, not true at all. Food is not the miracle cure to life’s problems. It will let you down. Food lures you. It seduces. Once you start to overeat, you need more and more to be satisfied. And like a junkie, you keep returning for your fix. Food can be a drug. You need to be attentive to how you consume it. Food is meant to nourish our bodies and keep us alive. But we’ve turned food into a mechanism to help us get through the rough patches.

Why did YOU turn to food as an answer? You won’t lose weight until you face up to why you have excess weight in the first place. It’s so easy to blame something else; genetics, big bones, quitting smoking, a medical condition, no time to prepare healthy food, ad infinitum. All those excuses are bunkum! It’s a choice. We all make choices. And sometimes unwise choices. You didn’t wake up one morning thinking, “I wanna be obese now!” Of course not. But you chose to indulge in limitless food for whatever reason got you started. You need to face that head on. That’s the brutal facts.

The additional stresses being overweight places on your body are serious. Preventable illness, is serious. Excessive weight, is certainly uncomfortable. But it’s not the end of the world. It’s not game over - it’s reversible.

You can decide to subsidise your illness with pills and medicines or you can choose to invest in your wellness. Remember, food is there to keep us alive and nourish us. Not to be used as an emotional coping tool. When you create a positive mindset, exercise consistently and eat great, nutritious, food - you feel so clean. So light. So fit. Certainly healthy. And you know you are capable of enjoying life to its fullest.
My goal is to encourage, inspire, educate and help you enjoy the benefits of being healthy and fit. To optimise your time, energy and effort towards achieving your individual goals. It’s about establishing accountability by creating a relationship together with ongoing support and motivation. And, it’s about a journey that results in an energy that makes each day an absolute pleasure to be a part of as you participate... in life.

You are a perishable item. Live accordingly. Ann.
