the festive season

Christmas is just around the corner and we all now find ahead of us a party or three to attend! Life is scattered with plenty of opportunity to overeat - be merry, add in alcohol - and boom, you have over indulged, feel physically ill and mentally drained.

Over the festive season we have brunches, long lunches, late night binges and weekend parties, all fostering refined rubbish and alcohol. And, we feel we have a reason to justify indulging.

All this stuff plays havoc with your metabolism, not to mention your waist and butt! There goes all the hard work you have put in throughout the year to get yourself looking and feeling sensational!

You may well be fun loving and the life of the party - charming, engaging and affectionate. You may well justify your choices saying you will be physically active - you promise yourself you WILL get to the gym at least every other day, do your personal training session twice a week and head in for a pump or combat class with a run thrown in! But, if you over indulge, all the hard training in the world isn’t going to make up for it. If you don’t have the right strategies you will bomb, become sluggish and feel like a blimp.

Restrict, control, or if possible avoid, the time spent around food at family gatherings, buffets, finger food parties - simply any social event where the temptations are simply too high. Be strong minded and say no to the indulgences.

If you can’t make controlled, conscious decisions to limit refined, empty calories more often than not you will have to deal with the choices you make. Not just January but months into the new year is spent undoing what you feast on during December.

Continue with your exercise, there is no excuse not to, and make smart nutritional choices - wherever you find yourself. Pile your plate with salads and vegies, light on the dressings, choose high quality lean proteins, seasonal fruits, nuts and seeds, and limit (or avoid) foods laden in sugar, salt and fat! Enjoy some sparkling water amid the beer and wines.

Hosting your own Christmas delight at home or need to take a plate? Pictured are two interesting ideas for a salad and a dessert. Choose your favourite salad and fruit choices and get creative!

Cheers to all your christmas festivities ahead! Stay safe, Ann.
